Mothers’ Day
Mothers’ Day is not on the church calendar, but it is one of those holidays that we pull in anyway.
I pray that for you, Mothers’ Day is not just an obligatory phone call or box of chocolates but an opportunity to give thanks for the role that your mom played in your life. The truth is that it would be difficult to find a single person who has contributed as much to shaping who we are than our mothers.
Yes, I know that for some, mothers have failed. I know that is terribly painful and costly, but it also highlights the importance of good mothering.
Sunday we will read a portion of what is known as the “High Priestly Prayer” of Jesus, which he prayed as the drama of his crucifixion and resurrection was beginning. Click here to read it.
The connection to Mothers’ Day might not seem obvious, but I think there are some wonderful parallels between the love and care Jesus expresses for us, and what mothers aspire to.
As we give thanks for mothers, we will have a look at the truly divine role that mothers are called to in our lives.
How has your mother shaped you? How might this be an expression of God’s love and care for you?
