Saltiness
“You are the salt of the earth” said Jesus to not just his disciples 2,000 years ago, but to us today. Click here for the full passage.
In Jesus’ day, salt was used mainly for two purposes — flavoring and preserving. For salt to work in either function, it must be distinct from the surroundings. If the salt is just like the meat or vegetable, it adds nothing, neither flavor nor preservation.
If we are to be salt, we need to be distinct from that which is around us. Obviously this doesn’t mean we simply wear a Christian t-shirt or a some cross jewelry. We are to live in a way that distinguishes us from a world that does not know God. We are to be a people dependent on God, guided by God, and, supremely, striving toward God.
Are you distinct? If not, where have you been sucked in and lost your distinctiveness? Unlike salt, we can get our distinctiveness back as we chose to live in love and service!
