Elizabeth Murray has been Director of Children’s Ministries since 1995. She also has been Youth Minister (middle and high school) since 2003. Elizabeth is involved with organizing special events at St. John’s as well as pastoral care.
Elizabeth grew up in the Midwest, moving from Indiana to Iowa and then Wisconsin. Elizabeth is the oldest girl in a family of seven children. She started her college education at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. After switching her major from elementary education to Fine Arts she moved to Greeley, Colorado and graduated from University of Northern Colorado with a BFA in 1974.
After a couple of years living in the mountains, Elizabeth was drawn to Florida because of its year round sunshine and the Atlantic Ocean. She met her husband, Douglas Ludwig, while they were both substitute teachers in Hillsborough County, Florida. Elizabeth went on to work for the City of Tampa Recreation Department and then on to Hillsborough County Recreation as an Arts and Crafts specialist. The two of them waited until Douglas, a letter carrier with the US Postal Service, could get a transfer to the east coast which was their dream.
After working with small recreation departments, substitute teaching, and then teaching preschool, Elizabeth felt a call to focus her work with children on their spirituality. She feels there is a great need for spiritual direction in children today. She strongly believes that nurturing young people should be the goal of all congregations. The society we live in is a very tough place to navigate for young people today.
Their favorite son, Murray Ludwig, is a graduate of the University of Central Florida where he earned a degree in aerospace engineering. Murray is presently in Pensacola studying navigation with the United States Air Force.
Douglas recently finished a 30 year career with the Postal Service. After the Postal Service Douglas spent a few years with the Brevard Public School System. He is presently filling his time with handyman jobs, volunteering, fishing and golfing.
Douglas and Elizabeth started their walk in the Episcopal Church at Holy Apostles in Satellite Beach. Elizabeth worked in the nursery while their son Murray was a baby and then she taught Sunday School. In 1995 the three of them transferred to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eau Gallie. Elizabeth and Douglas were drawn to St. John’s because of the welcoming atmosphere for children, and its loving congregation. Elizabeth was put in charge of the Children’s program in 1995 and soon became an Altar LEM (lay Eucharistic minister) and then a Visiting LEM.
She finally started a four year program preparing for ordination as a Deacon and was ordained in 2001. Although Elizabeth enjoys ministering to all ages, it is fair to say that she has a passion for being a leader for children in the Church. Elizabeth is also an Associate Chaplain at Holmes Regional Medical Center.
For relaxation she enjoys gardening at home. She recently purchased her own kayak and enjoys the water in Florida. Elizabeth may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
